Merry Christmas!
Since no one is at the office today, and I haven't a thing to do, I thought I would share some of my favorite Christmas music with my peeps.
Some songs are very popular. I notice that I have about eight versions of O, Holy Night on my iPod. (In fact, the only song I have more versions of is Amazing Grace.) You wouldn't think there were that many different ways to sing the same song, but I guess there are. This one, by Donna Summer, is one I particularly like.
Then there is O Come, O Come, Emmanuel by a trio called Selah. Two of the band members spent some time as children in the Congo where their parents were missionaries, so all of their albums have some songs with Congolese lyrics. This one doesn't, but it's still a nice performance.
Finally, I included Joy to the World by a band called Anointed. It's a very catchy version of the traditional carol, with an upbeat R&B sound.
Now for laughs:
The Twelve Gifts of Christmas by Allan Sherman is one of my favorite variations of the 12 Days song. I especially love his description of the Japanese transistor radio. (It has a wire with a thing on one end you can stick in your ear and a thing on the other end that you can't stick anywhere because it's bent.)
I don't know why I find It's So Chic to be Pregnant at Christmas by Nancy White so amusing, as I've never been pregnant, at Christmas or any other time, but it makes me guffaw every time I hear it.
And my favorite Christmas novelty song of all time is The Pretty Little Dolly by Mona Abboud. It was recorded on The Tonight Show sometime in the mid-60s. You can hear Johnny and Ed laughing at the end of the song. It's kinda dark and twisted, but that's why it's so hilarious.
